His drawings include experiments with pendulums, escapement ideas, and mechanisms intended to regulate repeated motion. A pendulum can provide a nearly regular timing reference because its swing is governed largely by its length and gravity. Leonardo explored how that regular motion might be connected to gears and other clockwork components.

Leonardo did not create the first successful pendulum clock. The practical pendulum clock was developed much later by Christiaan Huygens, who patented one in 1657. Leonardo's studies therefore represent an early investigation of the principle rather than a completed precision timepiece.

The distinction matters because Leonardo's notebooks contain both clock designs and general studies of oscillation. His pendulum work was part of a larger effort to understand machines that convert, regulate, and transmit motion.
