Aslan is a lion in The Chronicles of Narnia. He is specifically portrayed as a talking lion and the majestic ruler of Narnia, rather than an ordinary animal.
Created by C. S. Lewis, Aslan appears in all seven books of the Chronicles of Narnia. He is described as the King of Beasts and serves as a guide, protector, creator, and moral authority for the human children who enter Narnia. His character is central to the series’ larger story of good confronting evil.
Lewis drew on Christian imagery when developing Aslan, including the biblical symbol of the Lion of Judah. Aslan’s sacrifice and return to life in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe strongly echo the Christian story of death and resurrection, although Lewis said Aslan was more than a simple one-to-one allegory.
The name “Aslan” means “lion” in Turkish. In the 2005 film adaptation, Aslan was created with computer-generated imagery and voiced by Liam Neeson. That film introduced the character to a new generation of movie audiences.
