What KHM number is assigned to 'The Goose Girl'?

The story behind the answer

“The Goose Girl” is assigned KHM 89. In the Grimm collection, KHM 89 is the number associated with this tale about a princess whose identity is stolen on the road to her marriage.

The princess travels with a maid who forces her to exchange clothes, horses and social position. The disguised princess becomes a goose girl, while the maid claims the royal identity. The truth eventually emerges through the princess’s mysterious conversations with her horse Falada and her work tending geese.

The tale was first published by the Brothers Grimm in 1815, in the first edition of the second volume of Kinder- und Hausmärchen. It appeared as number 3 in that volume, but it became KHM 89 from the second edition in 1819. That publication history explains why readers may encounter more than one number in older references.

“The Goose Girl” is also classified as ATU 533, a separate folkloric system that groups stories involving a falsely displaced bride or princess. KHM 89 is therefore the expected answer when a quiz asks specifically for the Grimm collection number.
