What is the world’s tallest building, completed in 2010?

The story behind the answer

Burj Khalifa is the world’s tallest building, reaching 828 metres.

The skyscraper stands in Downtown Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and officially opened on 4 January 2010. Designed by the Chicago-based firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it uses a buttressed-core structure whose Y-shaped plan helps resist strong winds while providing efficient floor layouts.

The building was originally known during construction as Burj Dubai. It was renamed Burj Khalifa in honour of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, whose government provided financial support during the global financial crisis.

Burj Khalifa contains offices, residences, restaurants, observation decks, and the Armani Hotel Dubai. Shanghai Tower is the world’s second-tallest building, while Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur is also among the tallest. Height records can differ if antennas, architectural features, or occupied floors are measured separately.
