What is the weight in carats of the Tiffany Yellow Diamond?

The story behind the answer

What is the weight in carats of the Tiffany Yellow Diamond? The answer is 128.54 carats.

The Tiffany Yellow Diamond is one of the largest yellow diamonds ever discovered. It was found in South Africa around 1877–1878 as a 287.42-carat rough stone from the Kimberley mining region. Tiffany & Co. acquired it and had it studied and cut in Paris under the supervision of gemologist George Frederick Kunz.

Cutting transformed the rough diamond into a 128.54-carat cushion-shaped brilliant. The stone received an unusually elaborate design with 90 facets, compared with the 58 facets typical of a traditional round brilliant cut. The work was intended to bring out the diamond’s deep yellow color and distinctive internal glow.

The diamond was never sold as an ordinary retail jewel. Instead, it became a permanent emblem of Tiffany’s identity and has been displayed at major exhibitions. Audrey Hepburn wore it in publicity photographs for Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961; later wearers included Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. The 128.54-carat figure refers to the finished gem, not its original rough weight.
