The UCI minimum weight limit for a road racing bicycle is 6.8 kilograms.
UCI technical regulation 1.3.019 states that a bicycle’s weight cannot be less than 6.8 kg. The rule applies to the bicycle in working order and is checked without removable items that can be taken off during competition, such as water bottles. Fixed equipment, including bottle cages and certain mounts, is treated differently from removable accessories.
The limit emerged during a period when carbon fibre and other advanced materials were rapidly making racing bicycles lighter. It was formally introduced around 2000, following safety concerns that manufacturers might pursue extreme weight reduction at the expense of structural reliability. The figure has remained 6.8 kg even as modern bikes have become more sophisticated.
The rule is a minimum, not a target maximum: a legal race bicycle may weigh more. It is also often confused with a bike’s advertised “complete weight,” because manufacturers may weigh different configurations and omit pedals, cages or accessories.
