What is the Trinidadian street food of two fried flatbreads filled with curried chickpeas called?

The story behind the answer

The Trinidadian street food of two fried flatbreads filled with curried chickpeas is called doubles.

Doubles consists of two pieces of bara, a soft fried flatbread made from seasoned flour, wrapped around channa, or curried chickpeas. Vendors typically add mango, cucumber, coconut, tamarind, pepper sauce, or other chutneys according to the customer’s preference.

The dish is associated with Trinidad and Tobago’s Indo-Caribbean community. Its commonly told origin story begins in the 1930s, when Emamdeen and his wife, Mumun, sold bara and chickpeas separately before customers began requesting them together.

The name refers to the use of two baras rather than one. Doubles is not the same as roti: roti is generally a larger flatbread used to wrap or accompany a meal, while doubles is a compact, saucy handheld street food built around two fried breads.
