What is the title of Ukraine’s national anthem, whose opening means “Ukraine has not yet died”?
Answer
Shche ne vmerla Ukraina
Answer
Shche ne vmerla Ukraina
Ukraine’s national anthem is titled “Shche ne vmerla Ukraina,” meaning “Ukraine has not yet died.”
The lyrics originated in a patriotic poem written by Pavlo Chubynsky in 1862. Mykhailo Verbytsky composed the music, and the song became associated with the Ukrainian national movement in the nineteenth century.
Ukraine adopted the song as its state anthem after independence in 1991. A law passed in 2003 established the official text, using the first stanza and chorus with wording adjusted for the national anthem.
The title is sometimes confused with other Ukrainian patriotic songs and slogans, including “Oy u luzi chervona kalyna.” Those works are culturally important, but they are not the country’s official national anthem.
