What is the title of the first J.K. Rowling novel centered on private investigator Cormoran Strike?

The story behind the answer

The first J.K. Rowling novel centered on private investigator Cormoran Strike is The Cuckoo’s Calling.

Published in 2013 under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, the novel introduces Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott. Strike investigates the death of supermodel Lula Landry, whose fall from a London balcony was initially treated as suicide. The case forms the book’s central mystery.

The novel was Rowling’s first published crime novel and began the Cormoran Strike series. Rowling chose the Galbraith name partly to create distance from her established reputation and to experience the early stages of publication without the same expectations. Her authorship became public several months after publication.

Later books in the series include The Silkworm, Career of Evil, Lethal White, Troubled Blood, The Ink Black Heart, and The Running Grave. The titles can be confused because each follows the same detective partnership, but The Cuckoo’s Calling is the series opener and the only one in which Strike investigates Lula Landry’s death.
