What is the title of the first Harry Potter novel, published in the United Kingdom in 1997?

The story behind the answer

The first Harry Potter novel is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

J.K. Rowling’s debut novel was published in the United Kingdom by Bloomsbury on 26 June 1997. It introduces Harry Potter, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the central conflict with Lord Voldemort.

The book’s title differs between British and American editions. Scholastic published the United States edition as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 1998, changing “Philosopher’s” to “Sorcerer’s” for marketing reasons. The story itself is substantially the same.

The novel became the first of seven main Harry Potter books. It also began one of the most commercially successful children’s fantasy series ever published, with translations released around the world and a film adaptation arriving in 2001.
