Quenya is the fictional language developed by J.R.R. Tolkien with strong Finnish influences.
Tolkien began constructing Quenya during the 1910s, drawing inspiration from Finnish as well as Latin and Greek. In his mythology, Quenya is an ancient language of the Elves and is associated especially with the High Elves, or Eldar. Its name is related to the idea of speech or language.
Quenya is not simply a collection of invented words. Tolkien developed grammar, sound patterns, vocabulary, and historical changes for it, treating the language as part of a larger family with its own evolution. This philological approach helped make Middle-earth feel historically layered.
Sindarin is another major Elvish language, but Tolkien based its sound and development chiefly on Welsh influences. Khuzdul is associated with the dwarves, while the Black Speech was created for servants of Sauron.
