The Czech Republic’s national anthem is titled “Kde domov můj,” meaning “Where Is My Home?”
The song originated in the 1834 Czech play “Fidlovačka aneb Žádný hněv a žádná rvačka,” written by Josef Kajetán Tyl. František Škroup composed the music. In the play, the song is performed by the character František Škroup’s blind musician, making it part of the Czech national revival in the nineteenth century.
Only the first stanza functions as the Czech national anthem today. During the former Czechoslovakia, it was paired with the Slovak song “Nad Tatrou sa blýska.” After Czechoslovakia dissolved in 1993, the Czech Republic retained “Kde domov můj” as its anthem.
The title is often shortened in English discussions, but the original Czech wording is the canonical name.
