What is the title of the 2013 animated spin-off from Pixar’s Cars franchise?

The story behind the answer

Planes is the title of the 2013 animated spin-off from Pixar’s Cars franchise.

Planes follows Dusty Crophopper, a crop-dusting aircraft that dreams of competing in an around-the-world aerial race. The movie takes place in the same broad world of anthropomorphic vehicles as Cars, but it was produced by Disneytoon Studios rather than Pixar.

The film was directed by Klay Hall and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures on August 9, 2013. Its story uses a familiar underdog structure while shifting the action from roads and racetracks to airports and international flight routes.

Planes was followed by Planes: Fire & Rescue in 2014. Because the spin-off uses the Cars universe and features vehicle characters, it is often casually called a Pixar film. However, Pixar did not produce Planes, so the studio distinction matters.
