What is the title of Sherlock’s 2016 Christmas special?

Sherlock’s 2016 Christmas special is titled “The Abominable Bride.”

The special moves between the programme’s modern continuity and a Victorian setting inspired by the original Sherlock Holmes stories. Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman play Holmes and Watson in period costumes, investigating a supposedly dead bride who appears to have returned to kill people.

The title combines the Victorian atmosphere with a phrase associated with the Abominable Snowman, a recurring cultural image in adventure fiction. The special also uses its historical mystery to explore events and ideas connected with the modern series.

“The Abominable Bride” was written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss and directed by Douglas Mackinnon. It was broadcast on BBC One on 1 January 2016 and later received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.
