Pixar’s third feature film in the Cars series, released in 2017, is titled Cars 3.
The film follows Lightning McQueen as a new generation of racers, led by Jackson Storm, threatens his place in the sport. After a serious crash, McQueen begins training with Cruz Ramirez and revisits lessons connected to the late Doc Hudson. The story focuses on competition, mentorship, and how an experienced champion can respond to change.
Cars 3 was directed by Brian Fee, who had worked as a storyboard artist on earlier Pixar films. It was produced by Kevin Reher and features Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen, Cristela Alonzo as Cruz Ramirez, and Armie Hammer as Jackson Storm.
Cars 3 is the third theatrical Cars feature, following Cars in 2006 and Cars 2 in 2011. It is separate from the franchise’s short films, television series, and video games. The title is straightforward, but it is sometimes confused with the animated series Cars on the Road, which premiered later on Disney+.
