What is the title of Pink Floyd's first album?

The story behind the answer

Pink Floyd’s first album was The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Released in August 1967, it introduced the band as one of Britain’s most distinctive psychedelic groups and was recorded largely under the creative leadership of founding singer and guitarist Syd Barrett.

The album grew out of Pink Floyd’s experimental performances at London’s UFO Club. Its songs combine short, whimsical Barrett compositions such as “Bike” and “The Gnome” with extended pieces including “Astronomy Dominé” and “Interstellar Overdrive.” Producer Norman Smith oversaw the sessions at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios, where the band used echo, reverb, and other studio effects to create its colorful sound.

The title comes from chapter seven of Kenneth Grahame’s 1908 children’s novel The Wind in the Willows, which features a visionary encounter with the god Pan. A common mix-up is confusing this debut with The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd’s most famous album, released six years later in 1973. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn reached number six on the UK album chart.
