What is the title of Lost’s season 2 premiere episode?

The season 2 premiere of Lost is titled “Man of Science, Man of Faith.”

The episode follows the aftermath of the survivors’ opening of the underground hatch at the end of season one. It begins by showing a man inside the station performing a daily routine before revealing how that hidden storyline connects to the crash and the survivors above ground.

The title reflects one of Lost’s central themes: the tension between scientific explanation and spiritual belief. Jack often demands evidence and practical answers, while Locke is more willing to interpret the island as meaningful or purposeful. Their disagreement becomes especially important as the hatch introduces new rules, technology, and unanswered questions.

The episode was written by Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse and directed by Jack Bender. It is sometimes confused with “Orientation,” the third episode of season two, which explains more of the Swan station’s procedures and history.
