What is the title of J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1954 novel about Frodo’s quest?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s 1954 novel about Frodo’s quest is The Fellowship of the Ring.

It is the first volume of The Lord of the Rings. The book was published in the United Kingdom on 29 July 1954, followed by the second volume, The Two Towers, and the third, The Return of the King. The story begins in the Shire and develops into a mission to destroy the One Ring in Mount Doom.

The title refers to the group formed at Rivendell to help protect Frodo and advance the quest. Its members include representatives of Hobbits, Men, Elves and Dwarves, as well as Gandalf. The Fellowship does not remain together for the entire story, but its formation marks the central turning point of the first volume.

The novel is sometimes casually called the first part of a trilogy, although Tolkien conceived The Lord of the Rings as one long work divided into volumes. The three-volume publication structure became standard for readers.
