Are You Experienced was released in the United Kingdom on May 12, 1967, and in the United States on August 23 of the same year. The UK and US editions had different track listings: the American version added songs first issued as singles, including “Purple Haze,” “Hey Joe,” and “The Wind Cries Mary.”

The album was recorded between October 1966 and April 1967 at London studios including De Lane Lea, CBS, and Olympic. It became an immediate commercial and critical success. “Axis: Bold as Love” was Hendrix’s second Experience album, while Electric Ladyland was his third; Band of Gypsys was a later live album by a different lineup.
