What is the title of Georgia O'Keeffe's 1935 painting featuring a large white flower above a New Mexico landscape?
Answer
Ram's Head, White Hollyhock-Hills
Georgia O'Keeffe's 1935 painting featuring a large white flower above a New Mexico landscape is Ram's Head, White Hollyhock-Hills.
The work combines two recurring O'Keeffe subjects: a bleached animal skull and a dramatic New Mexico view. A white hollyhock rises near the center, while the distant hills and open sky provide a broad Southwestern setting.
Its title identifies the ram's head, the white hollyhock, and the hills rather than reducing the image to a single object. O'Keeffe frequently juxtaposed bones with flowers and landscapes, emphasizing their shapes, textures, and visual contrasts.
The painting belongs to her New Mexico period and is held by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. It is different from her better-known flower paintings that omit the skull and landscape.
