What is the title of Georgia O'Keeffe’s 1932 painting of a large white flower?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe’s 1932 large white-flower painting is titled Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.

The painting presents a close-up of a white jimson weed, or datura, against a dark background. O'Keeffe enlarged flowers so viewers had to confront their forms and colors rather than glance at them as ordinary botanical details.

The work became especially famous after its sale at auction in 2014. It brought $44.4 million, then the highest price ever paid for a painting by a female artist at auction. The record helped renew public attention to O'Keeffe’s market and legacy.

The painting is often casually called Jimson Weed, but the full title includes White Flower No. 1. It is also distinct from O'Keeffe’s many iris, poppy, and canna paintings.
