What is the title of Georgia O'Keeffe's 1930 painting of a white flower against a dark background?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe's 1930 painting of a white flower against a dark background is Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.

The painting presents a large white jimson weed, also called datura, against a nearly black ground. O'Keeffe enlarged flowers so viewers had to confront their forms and subtle color changes rather than glance at them as small natural objects.

The work became especially famous after being sold at auction in 2014 for $44.4 million, including fees. That price made it the most expensive painting by a female artist at the time, a record later surpassed by other artists.

Its title includes both the plant's common name and the designation White Flower No. 1. It is often mixed up with O'Keeffe's flower paintings such as Black Iris or Red Canna, but those depict different flowers and use different titles. The painting is held by the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.
