What is the title of Dalí's 1954 reworking of this painting?

The story behind the answer

Dalí’s 1954 reworking is titled The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory.

The later painting revisits the composition of The Persistence of Memory but changes its visual logic. Instead of presenting a stable dream landscape with limp watches, Dalí shows the earlier image breaking apart into separated fragments and rectangular blocks.

The work reflects Dalí’s interest in scientific and atomic imagery during the postwar period. The original forms appear systematically disintegrated, while gaps between the blocks reveal additional spatial effects. It is therefore a distinct later painting, not simply a renamed version of the 1931 original.

The title is often confused with informal descriptions such as “The Melting Clocks” or “The Soft Watches.” Those phrases refer to the original painting or its imagery, whereas The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory is the formal title of the 1954 variation. The reworking is held by the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.
