Answer
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
C.S. Lewis’s 1950 novel that introduces Narnia is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It was the first Narnia book published, although many editions now place it second in chronological reading order.
The story follows Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie, four children evacuated from London during the Second World War. Lucy discovers a passage through a wardrobe into Narnia, a land trapped in winter by the White Witch. The children become involved in Narnia’s conflict and meet Aslan.
The title identifies three of the story’s major elements: Aslan, the White Witch, and the wardrobe that serves as the doorway. Readers sometimes assume the book must come first chronologically because it was published first; however, The Magician’s Nephew describes earlier events, including Narnia’s creation.
The novel became one of Lewis’s best-known works and has been adapted several times. The most prominent modern film adaptation was released in 2005.
