Black Sabbath’s second studio album is Paranoid. Released in 1970, it followed the band’s self-titled debut and became one of heavy metal’s defining records.

The album was recorded in London in June 1970, only a few months after Black Sabbath. It includes several of the band’s best-known songs, including “War Pigs,” “Iron Man,” “Paranoid,” and “Planet Caravan.” The record was produced by Rodger Bain.

A common mix-up is the album’s original working title: it was initially intended to be called War Pigs, after the opening track. The title was changed partly because the record company considered “Paranoid” more marketable. “Paranoid” itself was written quickly as an extra song when the band realised they needed more material.

The album reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and helped establish Black Sabbath as a major force in heavy metal. Later albums such as Master of Reality, Vol. 4, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath followed it in the band’s chronology.
