Bhutan’s national anthem is titled “Druk Tsendhen,” commonly translated as “The Thunder Dragon Kingdom.”
The anthem reflects Bhutan’s traditional identity as Druk Yul, or the “Land of the Thunder Dragon.” The dragon is a major national symbol and is linked to the country’s name, culture, and monarchical history. The official anthem is sung in Dzongkha, Bhutan’s national language.
The lyrics were written by Dasho Gyaldun Thinley, while Aku Tongmi composed the music. Tongmi was trained in music in India and helped create a ceremonial style suitable for state occasions. The anthem was introduced in the 1960s as Bhutan modernized its official institutions.
“Druk Yul” is a national name and cultural expression, not the title of the anthem. That distinction causes confusion because both phrases refer to Bhutan’s dragon symbolism. “Druk Tsendhen” is the specific title used for the national song.
