Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album that premiered on HBO is Lemonade.
Lemonade was released on April 23, 2016, through Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records. It was accompanied by a one-hour film broadcast on HBO, combining music, poetry, spoken narration, and striking visual imagery. The album is organized around emotional stages including intuition, denial, anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, reform, forgiveness, hope, and redemption.
Its music draws on R&B, rock, country, blues, soul, hip-hop, and electronic styles. Major songs include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” and “Freedom.” The project features contributions from artists including Jack White, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, and James Blake.
Lemonade is sometimes confused with Black Is King, Beyoncé’s 2020 visual album and film inspired by The Lion King: The Gift. It is also separate from Homecoming, the 2019 concert film documenting her Coachella performance.
