Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about marriage, betrayal, and Black womanhood is Lemonade.
Released on April 23, 2016, Lemonade followed a surprise HBO premiere of a film with the same title. The album blends R&B with rock, country, blues, soul, pop, reggae, and hip-hop, giving each section a distinct musical atmosphere.
Its songs include “Formation,” “Sorry,” “Hold Up,” “Freedom,” and “All Night.” The accompanying film uses poetry, visual symbolism, family history, and images of Black women and communities to create a connected narrative rather than a conventional collection of separate music videos.
Lemonade debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and became Beyoncé’s sixth consecutive solo album to do so. It received nine Grammy nominations and won two, including Best Urban Contemporary Album. It is sometimes confused with Black Is King, Beyoncé’s 2020 visual album project.
