What is the title of Australia’s national anthem, officially adopted in 1984?

The story behind the answer

Australia’s national anthem, officially adopted in 1984, is titled “Advance Australia Fair.”

Peter Dodds McCormick wrote and composed the song in 1878. It was first performed publicly in Sydney that year and later became one of several songs associated with Australian national identity. “Waltzing Matilda” remains a famous Australian patriotic song, but it is not the country’s national anthem.

“Advance Australia Fair” replaced “God Save the Queen” as Australia’s national anthem in 1984, following a national poll and government decision. The anthem’s wording was revised in 2021 to remove the phrase “young and free,” reflecting recognition of Australia’s long Indigenous history.

The official anthem has two standard verses in current practice, although public ceremonies generally use the first verse and chorus. Australia also recognizes “God Save the King” as its royal anthem.
