What is the title of Argentina’s national anthem, first performed in 1813?
Answer
Himno Nacional Argentino
Answer
Himno Nacional Argentino
Argentina’s national anthem is titled “Himno Nacional Argentino,” or “Argentine National Anthem.”
The anthem was written during the Argentine War of Independence. Vicente López y Planes wrote the lyrics, and Blas Parera composed the music. It was approved by the Assembly of Year XIII in 1813 and first performed publicly on 14 May 1813 at the home of Mariquita Sánchez de Thompson in Buenos Aires.
The original composition was much longer and more overtly focused on the struggle against Spanish rule. In modern official use, only a shortened section is normally performed. The change reflects Argentina’s later national identity and the ceremonial need for a more concise anthem.
“Marcha de San Lorenzo” and “Aurora” are also well-known Argentine patriotic songs, but neither is the national anthem. The anthem’s formal title is generally rendered in Spanish, even in English-language references.
