XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger, a payment-focused blockchain launched in 2012. Ripple, the technology company originally known as OpenCoin, operates products connected with the ledger, but Ripple and the XRP Ledger are not the same entity. The token’s three-letter code is XRP.
Development of the ledger began in 2011, led by David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto. Unlike Bitcoin, XRP was created in full at the network’s inception rather than being issued through conventional proof-of-work mining. The ledger uses a consensus protocol in which validators agree on transactions.
The wrong options are tickers for other projects: XTZ is associated with Tezos, XEM with NEM, and XLM with Stellar. Another common mistake is calling the token “Ripple”; Ripple is the company, while XRP is the asset.
