In what year was the cryptocurrency Dogecoin created?

The story behind the answer

Dogecoin was created in 2013.

Software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched Dogecoin on December 6, 2013. Palmer, then working in marketing in Australia, had registered Dogecoin.com and created a playful landing page; Markus later built the cryptocurrency after contacting him. Their project was intended as a joke about the speculative excitement surrounding Bitcoin and the growing number of new digital currencies.

The coin used the Shiba Inu “Doge” internet meme as its visual identity and quickly developed a large online community. Technically, Dogecoin was based on code and ideas associated with Litecoin and Luckycoin. It used the Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm, allowing miners to validate transactions and add blocks to its blockchain.

The year is sometimes confused with 2014 because the Dogecoin community and its tipping culture expanded rapidly then. Dogecoin also changed its monetary design: it began with an intended 100-billion-coin limit, but developers later removed the cap and established ongoing issuance of roughly 5 billion coins per year. Its symbol is Ð and its ticker is DOGE.
