What is the term for a bicycle with an electric motor?

The story behind the answer

A bicycle fitted with an electric motor is called an e-bike, short for electric bicycle. It remains a bicycle in form and operation, but the motor supplies assistance or, in some designs, can propel it under particular conditions.

Most e-bikes use a rechargeable battery, an electric motor and a controller that regulates assistance. Many common models provide power when the rider pedals; this is called pedal assist. Other designs include a throttle, and legal definitions differ by jurisdiction regarding motor power, assisted speed, throttles and whether registration or licensing is required.

An e-bike is not automatically a motorcycle, scooter or moped. Those vehicles generally have different frames, controls, performance characteristics and legal classifications, even though some electric versions may look similar. Modern e-bikes are used for commuting, cargo hauling, recreation and mobility assistance. Their batteries and motors can make hills, headwinds and longer journeys more manageable without removing the rider’s role in propulsion.
