What is the tallest mountain in Africa?
Answer
Mount Kilimanjaro
Answer
Mount Kilimanjaro
The tallest mountain in Africa is Mount Kilimanjaro.
Kilimanjaro is a dormant stratovolcano in northeastern Tanzania, close to the border with Kenya. Its highest point, Uhuru Peak on the Kibo cone, rises to about 5,895 metres (19,341 feet) above sea level. The mountain stands dramatically above the surrounding plains and is also the world's highest free-standing mountain.
Kilimanjaro is made up of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the tallest and retains a crater near its summit, while Mawenzi is rugged and heavily eroded. Although Kilimanjaro is not currently active, its volcanic origins explain its enormous height and distinctive shape.
A common mix-up is Mount Kenya, which is Africa's second-highest mountain. Kilimanjaro is also one of the Seven Summits, but climbing it is primarily a high-altitude trekking challenge rather than a technical mountaineering expedition. The first recorded ascent to the summit was made by Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller, and Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo in 1889.
