The Swahili term for the seven principles of Kwanzaa is Nguzo Saba.

Nguzo Saba means “the seven principles.” Maulana Karenga developed the principles in 1965, one year before he created Kwanzaa. Together, they form the holiday’s central ethical framework, often described as a communitarian philosophy.

Each day of Kwanzaa, observed from December 26 through January 1, highlights one principle: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective work and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (faith).

A common mix-up is confusing Nguzo Saba with Mishumaa Saba. Nguzo Saba names the principles, while Mishumaa Saba means the seven candles used in the kinara. “Saba Saba” is not the standard name for Kwanzaa’s principles.
