Bilbo, the central character in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, has the surname Baggins.
Bilbo Baggins is a Hobbit who lives at Bag End, a comfortable smial in Hobbiton. At the beginning of The Hobbit, he is portrayed as respectable, well settled, and fond of quiet routines. Gandalf’s arrival draws him into Thorin Oakenshield’s expedition to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug.
Bilbo’s character develops through travel, danger, and independent decisions. During the journey, he finds a mysterious Ring in the goblin tunnels beneath the Misty Mountains and later uses it to help the company escape several threats. His encounter with Gollum is one of the book’s most important episodes.
Baggins is sometimes confused with other Hobbit family names. The Took family is Bilbo’s adventurous maternal family, while the Brandybucks are another prominent Hobbit clan. Samwise Gamgee is Bilbo’s later heir and Frodo’s companion, not Bilbo’s surname.
