Bilbo and Frodo share the surname Baggins in J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories.
Bilbo Baggins is the protagonist of The Hobbit, while Frodo Baggins becomes the Ring-bearer in The Lord of the Rings. They are relatives from Hobbiton, a village in the Shire, and both belong to the comfortable but adventurous Baggins family.
Tolkien used family relationships to make the transition between his two major Middle-earth narratives feel natural. Bilbo adopts Frodo as his heir, and Frodo later inherits Bag End and the One Ring after Bilbo’s long-awaited birthday party.
The name is often confused with Took, Brandybuck, or Gamgee. Those are also important Hobbit family names, but they belong to different characters: Peregrin Took, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Samwise Gamgee. Frodo’s canonical surname remains Baggins.
