The three-story Georgian-style house became the fictional McCallister family home in the 1990 Christmas comedy. Winnetka, a North Shore suburb of Chicago, was a natural filming area for writer-producer John Hughes, who grew up near Chicago and set or filmed several productions in the region.

The address is real, but much of the movie’s interior action was not filmed inside the house. Production crews recreated most interiors in a former gym at New Trier High School’s west campus, where there was more room for cameras, lighting, stunts, and crew. The real house supplied the instantly recognizable exterior and a limited number of interior locations.

Fans sometimes confuse it with nearby 656 Lincoln Avenue, which appeared as Mitch Murphy’s house. The two neighboring addresses are separate filming locations.
