What is the stock-market ticker for Broadcom, the semiconductor and infrastructure-software company?

The story behind the answer

AVGO is the stock-market ticker for Broadcom, the semiconductor and infrastructure-software company.

Broadcom Inc. trades on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the symbol AVGO. The company supplies semiconductor products used in communications, networking, storage, broadband, and industrial systems. It also owns major infrastructure-software businesses, making it more diversified than a pure chip designer.

The name can cause confusion because an earlier company called Broadcom Corporation used the ticker BRCM. Avago Technologies acquired Broadcom Corporation in 2016 and adopted the Broadcom name; the resulting public company retained AVGO as its ticker. The older BRCM symbol therefore does not identify the current corporation.

Broadcom has ranked among the world's most valuable companies as investors have valued its networking chips, connectivity products, software operations, and exposure to artificial-intelligence infrastructure. A ticker identifies a listed security, not necessarily every brand or subsidiary associated with a company.
