What is the stock exchange located in the Wall Street area abbreviated as NYSE?

The story behind the answer

The stock exchange located in New York’s Wall Street area and abbreviated as NYSE is the New York Stock Exchange.

The NYSE is one of the world’s major securities markets, where investors buy and sell shares of publicly traded companies. It is headquartered at 18 Broad Street in Lower Manhattan and is often nicknamed “the Big Board.” Its trading system combines electronic transactions with activity on a famous physical trading floor.

The exchange traces its formal origins to the Buttonwood Agreement, signed by 24 brokers on May 17, 1792. Those brokers agreed on trading rules and commissions, creating the foundation for an organized New York securities market. The exchange later became known as the New York Stock and Exchange Board before adopting its present name.

A common mix-up is confusing the NYSE with the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The Dow is a stock-market index, not an exchange. The NYSE is also different from Nasdaq, another U.S. stock exchange known for its electronic marketplace. Today, the NYSE is owned by Intercontinental Exchange.
