What is the standard distance for the men's sprint hurdles event?
Answer
110 meters
Answer
110 meters
The standard distance for the men's sprint hurdles event is 110 meters. The event is formally called the 110 metres hurdles and is the men's outdoor short-hurdle race in elite athletics.
A regulation race contains ten hurdles. The first hurdle is 13.72m from the starting line, the hurdles are spaced 9.14m apart, and runners cover 14.02m from the final hurdle to the finish. Senior men's hurdles are 1.067m high. Athletes normally use eight strides to reach the first hurdle and three strides between each barrier, although a race is won through speed, rhythm, and technique as much as raw power.
The event has a long Olympic history: men's 110m hurdles has been on the Olympic programme since the first modern Games in 1896. Its imperial-era predecessor was often described as the 120-yard hurdles, which helps explain why older records and historical accounts can use a different distance. The women's standard sprint hurdles event is 100m, not 110m. The 400m hurdles is a separate long-hurdles event for both men and women.
