What is the scientific name of the yellow-eyed penguin?
Answer
Megadyptes antipodes
Answer
Megadyptes antipodes
The scientific name of the yellow-eyed penguin is Megadyptes antipodes.
The yellow-eyed penguin is native to New Zealand, where it is also known by the Māori name hoiho. Its most recognizable feature is the pale yellow band that runs from the eyes around the back of the head. Adults are about 65 centimetres tall, making them considerably larger than little penguins.
The genus name Megadyptes means “large diver,” while antipodes refers to the species’ association with the Antipodes region. Despite its distinctive appearance, the species is not simply a close copy of the crested penguins found farther south.
Yellow-eyed penguins usually nest in secluded coastal vegetation rather than in dense, highly visible colonies. Habitat loss, introduced predators, disease, and changes in marine food supplies have contributed to major conservation concerns. The name hoiho is often translated as “noise-maker” or “shouter,” reflecting its vocal behavior.
