What is the scientific name of the inland taipan, often called the world’s most venomous snake?

The story behind the answer

The scientific name of the inland taipan is Oxyuranus microlepidotus.

The inland taipan is native to the semi-arid black-soil plains of central eastern Australia. It is also called the fierce snake or western taipan. Its venom is exceptionally potent in laboratory toxicity tests, which is why reference works often describe it as the most venomous snake by that measure.

Its scientific name identifies it as a member of the genus Oxyuranus. The species name microlepidotus refers to its small scales. The inland taipan is not commonly encountered because it lives in remote areas and generally avoids human contact.

Venom toxicity is not the same as overall danger. Risk also depends on behaviour, habitat, bite frequency, venom quantity, and access to treatment. The coastal taipan is a different species, Oxyuranus scutellatus, and is more frequently encountered in populated areas. Antivenom and urgent medical care are essential after any suspected taipan bite.
