What is the scientific name of the European grass snake?

The story behind the answer

The scientific name of the European grass snake is Natrix natrix.

Natrix natrix is a non-venomous colubrid found across much of Europe and parts of western Asia. It is commonly called the grass snake, though regional names can create confusion with other harmless green or brown snakes. The species often lives near wetlands, ponds, lakes, and slow-moving water because amphibians are important prey.

European grass snakes are usually olive, greenish, or brown, with a characteristic pale or yellowish collar behind the head in many individuals. They are excellent swimmers and generally avoid confrontation. When threatened, they may release a foul-smelling secretion or feign death rather than bite.

The species was formerly divided into several subspecies, and modern taxonomic treatments have changed as genetic research improved. The name Natrix natrix remains the standard scientific name for the widespread European grass snake.
