What is the scientific name of the eastern diamondback rattlesnake?

The story behind the answer

The scientific name of the eastern diamondback rattlesnake is Crotalus adamanteus.

The eastern diamondback rattlesnake is a large pit viper native to the southeastern United States. Its bold, diamond-shaped dorsal pattern gives it its common name, while the rattle at the tail tip produces a warning sound when the snake feels threatened. It is one of the best-known rattlesnakes in North America.

Crotalus adamanteus uses heat-sensitive loreal pits between the eyes and nostrils to detect warm-blooded prey. Like other pit vipers, it has long, hinged fangs that can fold against the roof of the mouth when not in use. Its diet includes rodents, rabbits, and birds.

The eastern species is often confused with the western diamondback rattlesnake, Crotalus atrox. Their ranges and patterns overlap in popular descriptions, but they are separate species with different scientific names.
