Thamnophis sirtalis
Answer
Thamnophis sirtalis
The scientific name of the common garter snake is Thamnophis sirtalis.
The common garter snake is one of the most widespread snakes in North America. Its range extends from Canada through much of the United States and into parts of northeastern Mexico. The species is adaptable and can live in meadows, woodland edges, wetlands, gardens, and urban areas.
Its usual pattern includes a dark body with one or more longitudinal stripes, although colour and pattern vary greatly among regional populations. This variation has produced numerous recognised subspecies and local forms, which can make identification confusing.
Despite its reputation as a harmless garden snake, the common garter snake does produce mild venom in oral glands. Its rear teeth and feeding method make it generally low-risk to people, and bites are uncommon. The name garter snake refers to the striped appearance, which was historically compared with a clothing garter.
