What is the scientific name of the Amazonian poison dart frog commonly called the blue poison dart frog?
Answer
Dendrobates tinctorius
Answer
Dendrobates tinctorius
Dendrobates tinctorius is the scientific name of the blue poison dart frog.
This striking frog is native to parts of the Guiana Shield, including Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and northern Brazil. It is known for vivid blue or blue-black coloration, often marked with darker spots or patterns.
The species belongs to the family Dendrobatidae, whose members are commonly called poison dart frogs. In captivity, individuals generally do not develop the same levels of skin alkaloids associated with wild frogs because those chemicals come from dietary sources.
Dendrobates tinctorius is sometimes confused with Phyllobates terribilis, the golden poison frog. That species is famous for exceptionally potent batrachotoxins, whereas the blue poison dart frog is a different species with different geographic and chemical characteristics.
