What is the scientific name of the Amazonian manatee?
Answer
Trichechus inunguis
Answer
Trichechus inunguis
The scientific name of the Amazonian manatee is Trichechus inunguis.
This herbivorous aquatic mammal lives in the freshwater rivers, lakes, and floodplain forests of the Amazon Basin. It is the smallest of the three living manatee species and the only manatee restricted entirely to freshwater. Its smooth, rounded body and paddle-shaped flippers help it move through slow-moving waters.
Amazonian manatees feed on aquatic plants and can consume large quantities of vegetation. During seasonal floods, they spread into flooded forests, while falling water levels can concentrate them in deeper channels and lakes.
The species has been hunted for meat and oil, and accidental capture in fishing gear is another threat. Trichechus manatus is the West Indian manatee, while Trichechus senegalensis is the West African manatee; neither is the Amazonian species.
