What is the scientific genus of the Arctic musk ox?

The story behind the answer

The scientific genus of the Arctic musk ox is Ovibos.

The living musk ox is usually classified as Ovibos moschatus. Despite its common name and ox-like appearance, it is more closely related to goats and sheep than to cattle. Its heavy build, short horns, and shaggy coat are adaptations to life on Arctic tundra.

Musk oxen survive winter with a dense undercoat called qiviut. This fine fiber is one of the warmest natural animal fibers known and is collected from shed underwool rather than obtained by shearing the animal. A long outer coat hangs almost to the ground and helps protect the body from wind and snow.

When threatened, a herd may form a defensive circle with adults facing outward and young animals inside. Musk oxen once disappeared from parts of their former range but have been reintroduced in several Arctic regions. Their name refers to the musky odor produced by males during the breeding season.
