What is the running time of Disney's 1941 film Dumbo?

The story behind the answer

Disney’s 1941 film Dumbo has a running time of 64 minutes.

That compact length was unusual even for an animated feature, but it suited the film’s simple, fast-moving story about Jumbo Jr., an elephant mocked for his oversized ears who discovers that they allow him to fly. Walt Disney Productions completed the film for release through RKO Radio Pictures.

RKO reportedly wanted Disney to add another ten minutes because the picture seemed too short. Disney refused, arguing that extending it would weaken the finished film and increase its cost. The decision helped preserve Dumbo’s brisk structure and emotional focus.

The film was based on a story by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl, with illustrations by Helen Durney for a proposed novelty toy. It became one of Disney’s best-known early features, despite being much shorter than later animated films such as the 90-minute-plus productions that became standard.
